Summertime Drinks

25 July 2016

Oh, summer. We are loving the pools, beaches, and wearing bikinis all day vibes, but really what we need is a fun drink to cool off. Summer offers so many fresh fruits and creative recipes to make smoothies, slushies, cocktails, and mocktails that there aren't enough hours in the day to mention all of our favorite drink recipes. We did manage to round-up a few of go-to summer drinks that will keep you cool by the pool--or wherever you are this summer. Cheers! Watermelon Slush/Keg Dispenser: Watermelon is the summertime fruit. This melon is pretty sweet on its own, makes for a great summery drink recipe!

  • 4 cups of cubed/seedless watermelon
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 10 ice cubes
  • 1/3 fresh cup lime
  • blend till smooth in blender - enjoy.

You can also hollow out the actual watermelon to create a watermelon fashioned keg. Here's the how-to on that. Orange Julius: In our July To-Do List post, we mentioned that the Orange Julius turned 90! This happens to be one of the tastiest seasonal drinks and it is so very simple to make at home--fresh!

  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 6 ounce can of orange juice concentrate
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups of ice
  • Blend the milk and vanilla
  • Add the frozen concentrate
  • Add sugar and ice cubes - blend until smooth
  • Pour into glass, garnish with an orange slice and enjoy!

Summer drink making tip - there are
so many fun, multi-colored paper straws to add to your drink concoctions to dress them up an extra notch.

Banana Smoothie: Bananas are a good source of vitamins and potassium. Morning, noon, or night they are the perfect go-to snack option.  Better yet, bananas make for an excellent summer smoothie too. Some smoothies are full of hidden sugars, but this recipe is light - because it is bikini season afterall.

  • 1/2 cup of 1% milk
  • 1/2 cup crushed ice
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1 frozen/ripe/sliced banana
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • Combine 1st five ingredients in blender until smooth
  • Add in yogurt
  • Pour and enjoy

Summer drink tip - you can wash and slice your fresh fruit that you have purchased from the market and store in air-tight bags inside your freezer. This way, when you're in a pinch, you can grab the fruit and add it quickly to your blender for a healthy option on the go.

While we think these three summertime recipes are winners, we do know that there are many more recipes to try for summer. A few top-notch Instagram accounts to follow for drink inspiration are: @onenationdrinks, @ashroseconway, @apartment_bartender, and @gardencocktails.
